Art & Design week 3

Tuesday 3rd October

In this lesson we were experimenting with mark making and different textures. The first piece of markings we did was with oil based ink and we used different objects to make the marks such as forks, spatulas etc. We were then told to draw emotions without drawing anything too defined, we was given different types of materials to draw with such as a graphite pencil, charcoal, chalk etc. Then we we asked to draw textures whilst only using one shape throughout, we used straight lines, squares, circles and curved lines. After we then proceed to listening to different types of music and drew how they made us feel, there was three types of music the first piece was a slow piano tune, the second was an upbeat guitar melody, there was then a big juxtaposition in the finale piece which was a loud rock song. There was a lot of thought that had to go into deciding what texture to use for each category for example, the feeling joy had to be light and calming so using something such as a pencil would be ideal, however for the feeling anger a rough texture was required so using a graphite pencil which gives off a thick harsh line really imitates the emotion.

Materials-

  • Graphite pencil
  • HB Pencil
  • Biro
  • Chalk
  • Charcoal
  • Eraser
  • 16 sheets of A5 white cartage paper
  • 4 sheets of A5 black paper
  • Ruler

Processes-

  • Cutting an A2 piece of paper into 16 sheets.
  • I used the pencil for soft a soft effect such as the emotion joy.
  • Graphite pencil for a hard effect such as the emotion anger.

Technical skills-
I was rather good at anticipating what type of texture was needed for what emotion, shape and music.

Mono prints

To create these prints we started out but rolling ink on a glass slate, we then rolled that ink on a sheet of acetate where we then place different types of fabrics with a sheet of thin paper on top. Once we arranged the fabric we placed it on the press where we turned a wheel and manually rolled it through. After, we used cartridge paper and created a pattern out of the fabric with ink on, it then went through the press again only this time we had to roll it through with a sheet of cardboard on top to create more pressure to get more defined prints.

Once we were finished with the lesson we were walked through a cleaning process, first we had to pour a solution, that the teacher had made especially to remove ink, all over the glass and acetate. We then used a scrapper to clean the ink off. Once the glass was clean we then had to clean the roller, we fist had to pour white spirit on the rollers and wipe it off using blue roll.
